Lassa fever; All you need to know

The evil rats don come again ooo. After we survived ebola in 2014,they brought another one called lassa fever. This is all you need to know about this deadly virus:
CAUSE
Lassa Fever is caused by a virus called Lassa Virus. The virus belongs to a group of viruses which cause hemorrhagic fevers such dengue fever, ebola fever, yellow fever etc. The virus is also characterised by bleeding disorders and can progress to shock and death in many cases.
HOW IT SPREADS
Rats.
Lassa fever lives and multiplies in a particular type of rat called the Natal multimammate mouse which is found in sub-Saharan Africa.
The virus is contained in the urine and stool of rats. If the urine of the rats contaminates exposed food and humans the food, they can contract the disease. Breathing in the dried stool can also lead to being infected.
The virus spreads from person to person through direct contact with body fluids-saliva, nasal discharge,blood of infected persons etc.
THE SYMPTOMS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
Lassa Fever’s symptoms can be very tricky. It is usually similar to malaria and typhoid fever. These are some of the symptoms a victim experiences
• Fever
• Headache
• Sometimes vomiting and diarrhoea
• Yellowness of the eye balls.
• As the disease progresses, some organs may fail
• Bleeding may occur into the skin or/and from gums, nose, into the eyes.
COMPLICATIONS
• Deafness.
• Abortion
• Organ failure.
• About 1% of all infections end up in death.
HOW TO PREVENT LASSA FEVER
Avoid Rats. Avoid contact with them, cover your food so they don’t come in contact with them. Do not eat rats
Isolate infected persons. And use of masks, gloves, gowns, goggles etc when attending to infected persons.
Keep a clean house and environment.
TREATMENT
All persons suspected of Lassa fever infection should be admitted to isolation facilities and their body fluids and excreta properly disposed of. Early supportive care with rehydration and symptomatic treatment improves survival.

Hello people of ksu,the land of sun sand,its a subtle wenesday afternoon on this part of town,and on what's up today we bring you the issues and happenings around ksu.

 Screening is still on,a lot of screening in and screening out,no maths no english no  this no that,change of course change of faculty,a lot of things going down with the fresh students and their credentials,wishing y'all the best though...

 Final year balloting for hostels continue today(from yesterday),and the hostel balloting for fresh students is sheduled to hold on saturday(bring your school fees teller and admission letter with you).

 Am not quite sure why they postponed the balloting thingy to this week,am thinking its because they want to release another admission list,but ksu act "coco" at times,they might decide to release another list and term it "BATCH B", or just add names to the batch A that's already on the portal. in any case,aspirants should be on the look out,just keep checking the portal this week.

 Meanwhile,returning students have some few questions to ask the school,like:

* what's up with the results

* what's up with the natural science guys and their exams

* why the hell will they create a link for registration steps on the portal when their's no link for the actual registration.

My take,Ksu really needs to step up from their secondary school level and become an actual university,and also the v.c should start resolving issues rather than forming buhari up and down.

 Meanwhile other v.cs of actual universities have been working,as ;

* FUTMINNA,last friday withdraws a whooping 460 students(what!!!) for poor academic performance,as they served letter of withdrawal for this students who were said to be 100 level students that had below the 1.5 grade point stipulated by NUC for students to move on to the next level,and virtually all the faculties were affected.....four hundred and sixty !!! WTF !!!....what happend to those guys...did they all leave their brains athome or what ??

* UNICAL also followed suit,they expelled 9 students and suspended four more for examination misconduct....chai...
- UNIJOS by the way are still battling with their journey of no return strike,good news though,as the minister for youth and sport has intervened,and both the UNIJOS ASUU members and students alike have high hopes that the intervention by the minister will finally bring the strike to an end.

Everyone loves to feel important; show the person you love the most just how important they are every chance you get.

3. Show gratitude for everything they do for you

You undoubtedly appreciate your significant other very much. But do you show it all the time? Don’t just show your thankfulness around birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. Make it a point to thank them every day for even the tiniest of favors. Whenever they do something for you, they’re allowing you to relax just a little longer. Thank them for it. 4. Make their life easier whenever you can

On the flip side of the last point, you should do everything you can to make their life easier. You probably tell one another you love each other all the time. Obviously, there’s nothing wrong with that. But take it a step further: tell them whyyou love them. Statements That Deceive Students

 The power of the spoken word can not be over emphasized. Words have the power to uplift and destroy, which is why you should be careful as a student of the statements you listen to and take to heart.
Some students are defeatists, either by choice or due to circumstances in their lives, however a positive and optimistic attitude is a great asset to the successful person. Below are some statements you might hear and why you should not be deceived by them.
1. NO ONE GETS AN A IN THIS COURSE
Most students throw this statement around, usually from the very beginning of the semester. Already they are defeated even before the lecturer introduces the course, because they have reportedly heard from lazy students who have taken the course before. Do not let yourself be deceived, there is no course that cannot be aced. So throw away such statements and get to work.
2. A GOOD GRADE DOES NOT MATTER
While it is true that what you graduate with in the university does not determine the life you will live, do not be deceived that it does not matter at all. Usually those that say this are too lazy to apply themselves diligently to study and get good grades. You can determine, your grades by yourself, therefore it depends on you and the amount of work you put in.
3. YOU MUST BRIBE YOUR WAY THROUGH SCHOOL
Granted corruption is rampant in Nigerian universities, with many lecturers collecting bribes to upgrade grades and scores. However, there are still students who graduate, with good grades, without paying a dime as bribe. Therefore, do not be deceived by such a statement, as long as you do very well in what is expected of you, it is highly unlikely that anyone will hold you back because of bribes not paid.
 4. YOU CANNOT MIX SCHOOL WITH OTHER ACTIVITIES
While school work and heavy course loads, can eat up most of your time, do not be deceived into believing that other aspects of your life must be put on hold once you are in the university or college. You can mix other profitable activities, as long as you learn how to create a balance. Several students successfully run businesses side by side with school. Never limit yourself.

This is another lie. Like i said above, hard work pays off and good grades matter. Yet, they do not determine your life. So if despite your best efforts, you do not see yourself graduating with great grades, keep your head up, most students go on to be successful in  life, even with poor grades.

Meanwhile,here's our piece on why you must avoid carry overs and how you can avoid it;

Why You Must Do Everything To Avoid Carryovers.

Carry overs in the university system is normal,it basically means a student has an unfinished business. A student can only carry over a course when he or she scores 39 downward in both C.A and exam(over 100). Carry overs is not in all casses a real reflection of how intelligent or not intelligent a student is,rather its a reflection of how unserious,unsmart(if that word exist),unchecked and unintrested a student is. I have seen highjly intelligent students have numerous carry overs and relatively dull students pass through without carry overs,such is life,that's why a coin is two sided.Carry over can also be a result of unfortunate and unlucky incidents,such as missing scripts,lecturer attitude towards marking your script,or even a student's handwritten(that's right).

I have once been a victim of an unlucky situation. I was not around kogi state when an assignment worth 20 marks was been submitted,when i heard about it I quickly rushed back to school from Lagos to get mine submitted. Unlucky for me the lecturer in charge of the course is very strict and sent me out of his office. I thought to myself,"I still have 80 marks to fight for so why panic". This lecturer is the kind that barely comes  to class,but he gave us a material to read ahead of his exam. For most part of monday evenings we'll wait in class expecting him to come to class but he never does. On the day I  decided I wasn't going to wait in class for him,he showed up in class and seeing how scanty the class was he decided to conduct  test with the little ones in class. The test was for 20 marks and I missed it,making it 40 mrks missed already which ruled me out of contention to score an A. Words can't describe how devastated I was during this period,my worst fear of carrying over a course is lurking around me. I tried bottling my sadness and fear until the lecturer announced that marks will deducted for every undoted Is and uncrossed Ts in his exam,he was basically asking for a perfectly written error free exam which looked impossible under the sort of pressure we  were in. I prayed to God about the situation,focused a little bit more on that course than the others,did a whole lot of library work and research and when the exam came around I completely smashed it,narrowly escaping a carry over(which many of my mates had) that would have completely changed the dynamics of my academics. Am still grateful to God till today,who know what it might have been....

Reasons why you must completely avoid carry overs:

-It brings you down;

A) Academically: having carry over means you have a F(0) in that course. Its bad,its really bad. Having an E(2) or a D(4) is far far better than having a carryover. It means you just scored 0 after studying a course for a semester and it will definately reflect on your result.

B) Psychologically: having a carry over affects the psyche of a student. Its that evil. You don't feel whole again,you won't feel yourself among your peers anymore,you'll feel devastated,less intelligent,less smart and so on. Carry overs inflict serious psychological damage on the bearer. It brings your thinking and psyche to the lowest minimum...

C) Physically: keeping tabs with your main courses is physically tasking enough,add carry overs to that and you'll barely sleep at night. You have to meet up with the time table of your main courses,then meet up with the schedule of your carry over courses,that's so physically demanding,its almost like punishment.

-Its hard to recover: even though its technically possible to recover from the evils of carry overs and get your academics back on track,its extremely difficult and take so much determination and hardwork.

-The odds aren't favourable: the odds of you graduating with a great result or a good result shifts everytime you carry over a course. Imagine doing a carry over course in place of an easy to pass elective course...

-It leads to self esteem issues: when you are writting a carry over paper with guys that are below you,its a hard hit on your esteem and confidence level. You certainly won't be the most confident person on campus,infact you'll be the least confident,if you're not then its either you're shameless,dellusional,dull or completely out of touch.

-Its a bad experience all together: the demanding schedule,the insult by lecturers,the embarrasment of writting a carry over exam with your "juniors"...its a bad experience all together. 

How To Avoid A Carry Over:

-Never joke with your C.A

-Always be around class and get adequately informed

-Serious studying: studying isn't every one's bread ad butter,not every one enjoys reading and reading,its not sweet atall,but you gats to do it. That's the way. Use the iibrary to research helpful information as much as you can.

-Do your calculations: your g.p and stuffs

-Always add to what you know

-Always do he conventional first: do what's required of you in  test or an exam first,then spice it up with the result of your researchs after to the lecturers delight.

-Be strong physically and psychologically: in ksu only the strong will survive

-Use your time and work with schedule

And finally and most importantly...

-Know your God...

How to recognize a serious University student

All that glitters is not gold. Similarly, a popular Igbo proverb says that because all lizards lie on their stomach, you will never know the one(s) that have running stomach. I wonder if lizards do have running stomach but that’s just by the way. What’s my point? OK. There are so many students in schools but then, there are students and there are students… It could also be hard as well as confusing to identify those who are really qualified to bear honorable status of student i.e. those who are really the serious and those who aren’t. What spurred me into this direction? Just the other day, I was chatting with a very worried parent whose child seem to be unable to graduate from the university 3 years after the normal duration of his 5 year course. I was alarmed because I immediately knew why this parent was going through…for the past three years, maybe. I really felt for him because his worriment really showed. How could I tell him that shitty things like that can happen…? I mean, how can I tell him that it was partly his fault that things are the way they are now simply because he rather left it too late with regards to checking up on his boy’s academic progress up until now…? How can I tell him that there is thing called “carry- over” which is course/s that his boy must have failed and must pass before he can graduate…? But… When he said that he is even more confused now than ever because he is tired of hearing different version of the almost impossible mumbo-jumbos his boy was regularly spitting out, I knew I just had to tell him. That was because I sensed it from something he said and from the way he unknowingly hinted me that he now suspects his boy was an unserious student. In case you are in the same boat like this parent, or maybe you really want to rate your wards, or your friends and/or even yourself to know if s/he is a serious student or not or to know how serious you are with your academics, I will try to help you do so by presenting you with some of these pointers with which you can base your serious-student evaluation upon. This is how. A serious student… Knows his/her Grade Point Average (GPA) I don’t know any other better method than this with which to instantly identify a serious student. In fact, I think it is the fastest way to identify a serious student on the spot! Your GPA is the standard used in ranking and rating students’ performance in college so any serious student is supposed to be aware of this very important score. Granted, it is not always possible for many students to know the exact figure but then when you come across any student who does not even have any slightest idea what his or her own GPA figure is, like this sophomore student that even asked me “what is GP?”, take it from me, you are looking at a confirmed unserious student. So do you know your GPA? You see? Knows the nature of the question of any upcoming examination(s) This is so true because any serious students must have done his or her assignment thoroughly and must have mastered all the “tricks” which the lecturer or examiner is going to adopt in the exams proper. A serious student knows that the exam questions are not going to be very much different from those of the assignments and past question papers and as such s/he have familiarized as well as prepared himself very well with them so well for the sake of what lies ahead. S/he is never taken unawares because s/he is always prepared. In fact, the real serious students are known to be able to complete ALL their major school work one or two month’s ahead before the examination timetable comes out! This is one of the reasons why some very sharp students who don’t see
m to be reading (that much) still stay tops in the class at the end of the day! But if you come across any fidgeting student who is confused and sometimes completely lost (most especially on the exam day just some few hours before the exams start), simply because s/he does not have any inkling what the exam questions may look like, my two cents, s/he is a very very unserious student. S/he has failed to plan by preparing early enough and as such has failed already unless “help” in the form of exam malpractice comes from “somewhere”… One other thing, a serious student usually has an idea of his examination score even before the papers are marked once he is through with that very paper. I can almost hear you say, “…and so does the unserious student too!” but then I know you know what I am talking about. Knows where to get help. A serious student knows where to get help. The help I am about here is not “expo” or “runs” which is just the slang terms used for examination malpractice in Nigeria.S/he has no need for such distracting things. S/he knows that there’s dignity in labor and so s/he will always strive to achieve excellence through honest labor. Most times, you see some students complaining that they don’t know what to read or where to get the reading materials they think they need. The serious students don’t usually fall into this group. And that’s because they already know how, when and where they can get easily help. They know when the textbooks they need is available in the library. They know the willing students and/or lecturers who might be kind enough to give them such materials should the need arise. They know how to make use of the internet to solidify their knowledge in a particular subject rather than wait for the lecturer to carry the whole class usually at his ‘slow’ pace. Encourages others to succeed. This is usually because any serious student knows that there is no pride in mediocrity. You may be tempted to think that being the best amongst many who don’t know anything is good but is it? There is no challenge. There is no zeal or need to keeppushing yourself up to the limit. There is nothing to stimulate the brain. No way to measure how good you are getting. Simply put, there is no fun in studying anymore. So to avoid this, a serious student will have no other choice than to encourage others to succeed. S/he normally does this either by organizing tutorials or discussion class for a group of people or even the whole class. He will also tell those students who are seeking in truth where to get help. This will help him kill two birds with one stone. First other students will succeed and they will have no other choice than to attribute this success to him. Secondly, he will have his real reason to be on his toes, up and doing, knowing now that backsliding is not an option. Besides, by teaching others, s/he is able to learn more. I have heard many students who are often times complaining that the serious/intelligent students will not easily want to disclose the information on how to get through to others because s/he normally wants to succeed alone. Inasmuch as I will not want to deny the possibility of selfishness that could sometimes arise, I still know that such students complaining may just be doing so for the sake of excuse. They might not have even tried enough to get this help from the serious ones. I have this to say to them. Why are you complaining? Aren’t both of you students or are some students more equal than the others now? See my friend, stop complaining. Stop waiting for that intelligent student to come to you and help you out because most likely, it won’t happen. S/he is not in school because of you. If you need help, go out and seek it. Get off that high horse of yours right now and put on the toga of humility and grab the all help you need from him now that you still have the time… Knows the full details of “what’s next?” Many students don’t have any idea why they are in school. Some think it is just normal to be in school while many others think they are doing their parents some form of favor just by doing that. Many others have come to the conclusion that going to school equates to getting a good paying job in the end. Yes. I don’t know why you are in school but one good advice I always give to people is to always try as much as possible to identify the reason/s why they are in school or why they want to go to school in the case of those who are still seeking admission. By doing this simple check and evaluation, one can easily put him or herself in the path of becoming a serious student by putting everything in perspective in less than a minute! Quite unlike his opposite who even rejoices with the news that lectures have been postponed or won’t even hold at all, a serious student never takes pride in missing lectures. Lecturers may have to adjust by telling students not to cover the whole study area they would have normally covered had it been there was still time… Hooray! says the unserious student! This may cause many exams to clash with many students having to write more papers than they could normally handle. And sometimes to ease things off, such papers could be postponed. Another pleasing news to the ears of the unserious student who doesn’t even know or care that useful time is being wasted. But all these bother the serious ones.
