Phillip Emeagwali
Born in Onitsha, Nigeria and a roommate to Chike Obi,
the first Nigerian to receive a Phd in
Mathematics. When he was 17, Emeagwali scored in
the 99 percentile on the American SAT exam. This won
him a scholarship to Oregon State University in
Corvallis, OR, where he majored in math. Today, much
of the academic and computer world is amazed by
some of the discoveries of this young “Nigerian
genius.” In February of 1989, he the prestigious
Gordon Bell Prize for programming supercomputers
to work faster than ever before and for helping to
solve one of the nation’s toughest oil recovery
problems.

Lies ksu students need to stop telling themselves
1. I don’t need to start reading early: A lot of
students tell themselves this lie regularly. The truth is
that a fire brigade approach to reading might help
sometimes, but in the long run, you will find yourself
at the losing end, because the truth is adequate
preparation means starting early.
2. What i graduate
with does not
matter: This is a very
funny one, because if what
you graduate with does
not matter to you, it
definitely matters to those
who are paying your
school fees. And if you are
the one paying your school
fees, why then are you
wasting money if the grade
does not matter? Drop out
of school and go and
hustle. Have you checked
job advertisements
recently? They all want at least a 2’2.
