The National Association of Nigerian Students
has accused the Nigerian police of brutality against students.
Citing the death of two students of Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia, on Wednesday, July 28, the president of NANS, Comrade Chinoso Obasi described the incident as barbaric.
On Wednesday, violence erupted when a detachment of the police force fired shots at a peaceful protest by the students who had earlier occupied the Lafia-Akwanga Road demonstrating the death of a Part 2 student of the Department of Accountancy of the institution, earlier killed by a hit and run driver.
Comrade Obasi condemned the use of force by the police in addressing a protest by unarmed students, which later claimed the life of one student, with many injured.
NANS therefore asked the state government and security agencies to ensure that the culprits are brought to book without further delay.
Obasi said: “The act of killing unarmed students by the Police is very barbaric and condemnable, as we strongly believe that the government must put an end to this without further delay.
Lives are sacred and people who are paid to protect the lives and properties of citizens, must not turn around to become a threat to our lives as Nigerians.”
He also commiserated with the families of the victim and the institution.
NANS has also urged the institution authorities to resume academic activities, adding that it is opposed to the closure of the school.
Obasi said the school closure may be another attempt to prolong the already delayed academic calendar of the institution. NANS assured that it will pay a visit to the institution next week to rectify the issues plaguing the school.
