DEADLY MISTAKES NIGERIAN UNDERGRADUATE MAKE

Image result for picture of danger

‘’I just want to finish with this school, go outside and get a good job settle down and move on with my life.” Was what a friend said some days back while we had a chat at the “buka”. abeg nor ask me wetin i go find for there! in this world where there are scarcity of employment opportunities, I find it absolutely repugnant and repulsive for one to think in this manner. Thinking is free sha, but em.. you have to be realistic if you really want to be a difference! What my friend said actually led me to write this piece, on the mistakes we made before we became a graduate and how you can avoid these same mistakes, experience is the best teacher, though true, there are lots of disadvantages learning from your experience; it is very expensive.

It is always better to learn from other people’s experience, it will save you from falling into a situation that will have a lifelong trade mark on your life. One of the mistakes we made before we became a graduate is not working to earn a money, when we find ourselves relying on our parent for support, they took care of virtually every aspect of our academic endeavor, from the school fees, to our feeding allowance, wardrobe and many others, all we knew was how to spend money. This has put many of us in a difficult position to earn money after school. I recently spoke with a female friend on where she would like to work after school and she said the embassy. Just because she studied International Studies and Relations automatically guarantees her a place at the embassy. If by the time you graduate your dream job does not show up, what will be your next line of action? Then you wish you have gotten principles on how to make money.

It’s not too late to start now, to be sincere with you, life begin the moment you begin to assume responsibility for your actions, it is time you take responsibility for yourself, your age should not be a barrier, and you are not too young or too old to doing something financially rewarding. I have always been a critic of formal education without skill; it is unfortunate that modern educational system is overrated in the world especially in Nigeria. According to statistics, almost all Nigerian homes today have graduate, but I have also asked a basic question, how many home has employed or employable graduate? Many folks want to be done with the tertiary and go get employment, nobody wants to create job or even be self sustainable.

A lot of person outside today have degrees but they are not educated, education empowers you for success on every area of your life, while Academics on the other hand focuses on certificates, we must make a distinction between these two, the only way to make them work out is to use you academics promote your education, and you can do this by thinking outside the box. One great mistake many graduates made before graduating was not thinking outside the box. Now to the undergraduates; you must prepare yourself for world without certificate, yes! I quite agree that we must strive to be the best in school, accumulating good grades also does help, what happens if the certificate cannot not fetch you your desirable job, what will you do? You must prepare yourself for a plan B, when plan A fails, plan B should not.

In other to avoid this, as you pursue your academic endeavor, also acquire a vocational skill; we have a lot of them that can serve you a means of earning a living while in school. For those who have graduated, acquire a skill and you will be better for it. Many have the conception that there is still enough time, I once saw myself in this disposition too but there are consequences if you think this way, and one of them is that you tend to live your life carelessly, by the time you realize that you are no longer a baby, you must have wasted a reasonable amount of your years doing nothing. You have no reason not to start making money early in life; in fact it is even more advantageous, it is better to be doing something than to do nothing.

Looking at the world we find ourselves, those making the real cash are not those working with their certificates, I am very sure you will agree with me on that. Can I ask you a question? What services can you render that people will have to pay for? Have you wondered to ask yourself that question? To survive in this ever growing world, you must have something that people will pay for, if you don’t have one, it’s time you try as much as you can to provide services in exchange for money, the more the services you are able to render, the richer you will become. Think about it! The first book I bought with my money was, How to get what you want by Nido Quebein; New discoveries on how to reach your potential. I bought that book for less than 3000 naira then in 2007, and since I bought that book, I have not seen another copy elsewhere. My emphasis here is that, many of us don’t have the habit of reading, a lot have been said about hiding something from a black man in a book, as absurd as it sounds, that is the truth, many find it difficult to buy books for self development, I am not talking about the school books that you are been forced to buy while you are in school, I am talking about inspirational and motivational books that will enrich your mental capacity, books that will develop you entrepreneurial skills, even devotional sef e hard for some to buy! We must learn to cultivate the habit of reading, readers make leaders.

Try something new today and be above your peers. It is very important we strive to reach our potential, we must learn to always work to our optimum capacity, a lot of us are under utilizing our gifts. Search yourself and work towards achieving greatness.

WHATS UP

What’s up people. Its our first what’s write up for some weeks now and we promise you guys more consistency. So, without much famzing, lets dive into the world of KSU (or PAAU, whichever suits you better) and review some issues that’s has gone down over the course of the month along with some talking points.
News :
This is to inform all prospective UTME candidates who applied for admission into Kogi State University, Anyigba for the 2016/2017 Academic Session that Admission screening will take place between Monday, 26th September, 2016 to Wednesday, 12th October, 2016. The admission screening will be purely interactive. Registration Closes on the Wednesday, 14th September, 2016 at midnight.

The School Fees Payment for KSU Undergraduate, Pre-degree and Diploma School Fees and Admission Letter is up. Students (Bothe Fresher and Returning) can walk into any Zenithbank Branch Nationwide, pay and collect your PIN instantly before resumption. The account numbers will be made available to you at each branch.

Knowing fully well that’s its screening season for our incoming jambitos, our talking point is going to revolve around this.

Am sure all aspirants are aware of the registration steps by now (if not, click here). As a matter of fact some itchy ones already got their hands around the screening form thingy, but majority of them (and us, staylites, for curious reasons) are wondering what this screening will be like. It’s the first time a screening would be done in an interactive format, which raises some few questions;

#1. What kind of questions will be asked ?

Its quite funny trying to imagine what sort of questions will be asked. Will they ask what kind of food you eat or what kind of music you listen to (just kidding). Those are less likely questions. Obviously, the school management will create questions to be asked, which will vary from one faculty to another (am assuming). Some am assuming that the questions will be centered around what the individual knows about his faculty or study (you know, science questions for science aspirants, art questions for art student and so on). In this case its important for all aspirants taking part in this screening exercise to get themselves loaded with this knowledge just in case.

#2. Are less – eloquent speakers going to be considered or flagged off ?

The screening exercise is quite simply a “post – utme” extension, but this time it doesn’t require computer operating abilities unlike the last set, it’s requires an ability of of expressing oneself in a perfectly understandable manner, using the English language very well. The question however is will people who have difficulties expressing themselves due to the tension or not been able to use the English language properly still be considered or totally flagged off (with lecturers bemused of how this aspirants even passed through secondary school). The latter seems likely.

#3. Will tribe play its role as usual in the KSU world ?

In most things done in KSU, tribe always seem to play a major role as it helps some people and doesn’t help others (even on ATM queues). So, will tribe play a major role in dishing out admission or admission is going to be handed out by merit ? we wait and see.

#Pointers :

-          Proper dressing is important. Less flashy the better. Also guys, watch your hair cut if you don’t want to stay at home for another year.
-          Learn a lot about subjects relating to your course of study.
-          Make sure you are able to express yourself properly.
-          Also compose yourself properly. The exercise is just some few minutes.
-          Adhere to instructions.
-          Know thy God

I hope this has been helpful in some capacity, do your best and leave the rest to God

What To Do After Failing A Course

Image result for picture of student who succeed

Omission of expected or required action – Failure ; isn’t a music that a man will ever like his ears to get plugged to. Moments when you studied really hard for an exam and still end up getting the letter after and before E and G respectively. Though I have never met anyone who purposely set out to be a failure as it’s something that is always strictly avoided but in case it turns sour , here are some of the things to do after failing an exam.

FORGET ABOUT IT AND PICK IT ALL UP AGAIN : Ruminating on a failed exam and reminiscing your hours in the exam hall will do you no good, failure is a very great spin to success and it’s possibly inevitable in the story of a successful man as it’s one of the norms of life. Once it happens as such, take it as one of those things in life and carry on with your normal life with the determination of hitting the ball again but this time hitting it rightly and getting the goal. Dwelling on your failure gets you trapped up in an emotional doom-loop that hinders you from moving on. The past cannot be modified, but you can shapen your future with positive thoughts and determination. Bearing in mind that “ You will survive and you will make it“, do not allow the heat of the moment to weigh you down.

DO NOT MIND THE THOUGHTS OF OTHERS : On failing, you are bound to get thrown in the mud by people who have obviously been expecting your downfall. If possible, keep it at bay from people like this or rather get your mind toughened to listen not to whatsoever gibberish they have to spit but to the determined voice of your spirit saying “I will survive and I will make it”.

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE : In situations like this, you tend to get weighed down and downcasted as all hopes will seem dashed. Make a Chinese up-stand and change your perspective away from negativity with the belief that you will make it with determination.

SEPARATE YOUR FAILURE FROM YOUR IDENTITY : Don’t make the failure your personality, don’t make it occupy your head, don’t make it affect you self esteem, don’t allow it to interfere with your self confidence. Because you failed an exam does not sum up your personal self as a failure, there are a million and one thing you have and can still succeed at. Read about the history of Disney if you want to know more about how failure stimulates success.

PRAY TO GOD : Lastly but most importantly, this is your best bet in difficult times. Open your holy book – Bible to Psalms 14:3 or Mark 17 and see what it has to say about failure. Look and open up to God to come around and take over the situation, with faith and so much unbelievable ease, all will go well with you. He who falls is expected to stand, he who stands is expected to keep up with the race, he who keeps up with the race should not look back. That should be all on What A Student Should Do After Failing A Course. Although it can be avoided but at times it’s unavoidable which tends to avoid your cumulative average, but at the same time, you can build it all over.

Why Students Get Carry Overs

Image result for picture of student who failed in exam

Carry Over, if asked to be defined by a layman, would be said to be the act of holding or supporting a rigid body over a surface or simply the act of propelling or giving impetus to something . But ask a Nigerian student, the first meaning of carry over that comes to his innocent mind is that “ ‘carry-over’ is similar to ‘failure’ in Nigerian polytechnics and universities. It’s the act of re-taking a failed course or subject in the next or another subsequent semester.” So, to ‘carry over’ a course, means to re-take the same course some other time. The reasons of which we are going to consider in this write-up. So, sit back, take a chill pill, lessen your grasp on the worry of the content of the post and read along some of the reasons

EXCESSIVE CHILLING WITH FRIENDS AND HANGING OUTS : Say me hi to the social fanatics, shoutout to the party freaks and all hands in the air for those who are always around friends day in day out. Before you start throwing onine stones at me, I didn’t in any way say you should not chill with your friends, but there is time for everything. The paragraph you could have read, instead of laughing out loud in a friend’s place or holding a girl’s waist in a departmental party, might have gotten you out of failure and saved you from carrying over the course.

LECTURER’S VICTIMIZATION : Our students are not that poor in terms of academics! No! I refuse to believe! Then, how come they still carry over courses? Actually, some lecturers are just deliberately wicked. They derive joy in failing students. And perhaps, our lecturers brag with “Who has the highest number of carry-overs in the course he/she is taking ” when their meeting comes up. Some lecturers also fail endowed female students who disagreed to yield to their sexual wishes, let’s stop it there.

NOT PREPARING WELL FOR EXAMS : If you do not read, do not expect miracles. Well miracles happen at times, you might try it if you think you are the lucky type. I won’t advise it though. Therefore, learn how to prepare for exams.

NOT STUDYING PAST QUESTIONS : This is the best bet when it comes to preparation for exams, it might save you a whole lots of time reading a very huge textbook aimlessly, thereby going off point by covering a syllabus you wouldn’t even need in 10years time. That’s why you see some really brilliant students still carrying over courses, they read all day, off topic, not knowing what could probably be set in the exams. Trust, Past questions help.

NOT ATTENDING LECTURES : Students whoevade or probably avoid classes are more exposed to carrying over courses. The reason behind this is not so far-fetched and mind-numbingly obvious. Although some lecturers teach directly from PowerPoint and find a means to get the slides within the reach of the students. This makes it tempting for students to skip class, they just download the lecture slides, and learn the materials on their own. You might probably get away with this in easy courses, you’ll face problems in challenging ones. By skipping class, you miss out on a few important things: Detailed oral explanations from the lecturer which are keys to understanding the material The chance to ask questions and listen to the questions of other students and the answers Announcements and assignments Opportunities for extra marks e.g Attendance It sounds like a no-brainer, but it’s too important to not mention. Skipping class can make you look bad in the eyes of your lecturer especially if it’s a small class and the lecturer knows most of his students. Since grades are somewhat subjective, it’s a good idea to avoid irritating the person who will be handing out the marks. Mind you, that 10marks you could have probably gotten from your attendance could shoot you from an F to an Escape grade.

HEALTH CONDITIONS : If you have ever experienced a severe case of malaria during the exam or test period then you should know what I’m talking about. You are not expected to write something reasonable inside that question paper while you are feeling so cold and shaky as an effect of a sickness.

SPIRITUAL CIRCUMSTANCES : Those who do not know or probably do not want to succumb to the cause of their carry over will nod aggressively in approval to this like “ YES! Some witches are following me, that’s why I failed!“. Well, probably true, that’s why in every thing you do, you involve your God.

#THELIST : Top Ten Most Difficult Courses In KSU/PAAU

No course studied in the higher institution seems easy, but some are brutal and can snuff life outta you. However, don’t get afraid of them. They’re actually interesting. So grab a packet of popcorn as I take you through them.

10. Business administration : Business administration or biz admin as it is popularly called is our obvious choice #10 on this list simply because its a simple looking - but complicated course in reality. Its complicated nature tends to soak life out of student who study this course in KSU/PAAU and when they finally graduate be it first class or third class they just thank God for making it through.

9. Math science : Being in natural science alone in KSU/PAAU is like the dawn of hell fire (if you know what i mean), Now imagine students studying in a department like mathematical science ??

8. Accounting : Holy accounting !! There is just too much calculations and complications surrounding this course. 7. Economics : Economics is just one of those broad courses that just keep going on and on and on till you burn out. its takes a whole lot of hard work to graduate with a second class upper in economics, not to talk of a first class in KSU.

6. Mass communication : This course is more of written compared to the other course above but hell mass communication is damn stressful, albeit fun stress but still stressful. its even more difficult to graduate with a first class in this type of course where the praticals are just given without proper guidance by the lecturers which leads to total BURNOUT. Just ask them......

Oh lord my God !!!

5) Computer science : I don't even need to say much. Just look out computer science graduate of KSU/PAAU or any other university and see how much they have given to this course.

4) Law : Very Very Very hard course. In terms of studying, in terms of focus, in terms of concentration, I give it to law hands down. If you are not up to the task and you apply for Law in KSU/PAAU or any other Nigerian university then you just laid the red carpet for you fat headed failure. Its not just physically demanding, it is extremely demanding psychologically with all the rigorous thinking, studying and understanding of varying concepts, ma brother, law aiint no joke mehn !!

"The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet." — Aristotle.

3. Industrial Chemistry: I call this course the power, because these dudes can mix chemical concoctions of Ammonia and HCL and blow everywhere…chem guys, I dey joke o….Its actually one of the most difficult in physical science, because you’ll make friends with differential equation in physical chemistry, which will leave you wondering if you’re studying maths or chemical reactions.

2. Biochemistry: people usually think that it’s a combination of biology and chemistry. If you’re one of such, abeg, it’s a wrong impression. You will actually get familiar with Bio molecules and giant Organic structures, that will choke you up. This course requires much logic. What makes it challenging,is that you’ll have to learn a lot within a short duration. Metabolic pathways might seem frustrating atimes…*winks*. Another thing about this course is that their lecturers are always sadists, due to long years of studying brutal carbohydrate and enzyme structures.

1. Medicine: What makes this course challenging, is because you’ll be forced to read(jack) like your life depends on the degree of knowledge you obtain from their heavy an bulky textbooks. Some of them actually do go for thanksgiving, when they pass their MBBS exam, that contains Anatomy, physiology and biochem.
