On a friday evening,a week before the strike I was in one of those classes in management science. I looked around and saw loads of students charging one thing or the other as usual. I observed the chairs,and it looked like students had beenplaying king kong chase on those chairs. I thought they said renovated the school before the beginning of last semester,so what happened ??
We need a suitable academic environment to learn but at the moment ksu are not providing that and to be honest they are even lucky students are not agitating. Everything in ksu at the moment is in decline,things are going from bad to worse,which makes it harder every year for the institution to graduate first class students.
Kogi state university has gotten to a point where students have this "get admission and come out quickly" attitude. Many of we students keep mute about most of this things but do we realize that our silence has a big say on the not so encouraging academic records ?? When our comfort,academic excellence,well being and our future depends on the institution then we have start speaking and demanding. We clearly understand that the institution is a reflection of Nigeria as a country and kogi as a state,we get it,but in the outside world we have alternatives,but its a different ball game in the confine of an institution where 100 level students(indigene and non-indigene) pay #57,500 and #100,000 per head and spend even more on accomodation,feeding and other things,yet they still make life and learning uneasy for students,even extorting money from student by lecturers in order to pass a course,how fair is that ??
Below are 8 solid reasons why Kogi State University will not produce enough first class students at this moment :
* Poor Maintenance of Infrastructure
To be honest,ksu provides atleast enough infrastructures for students,where they fall short is the maintenance. Instead of creating a proper maintenance system,they watch infrastructures decay and rot year in year out until its completely unusable. How will this decaying infrastructures groom first class students ?? In ksu we have street lights but its not functioning,students get robed and killed in that darkness,in fussion fm we have different equipments,modern ones,most of it are spoilt and unusable,and they want a first class masscommunication student ?? Like I said earlier,all the chairs in classrooms are old and rusty,yet they want to produce more than 100 first class graduate sitting on those things ?? I could go on and on and on.
* The school enviroment lacks creativity :
I don't even need to say much about this. When you are able to walk through all faculties in ksu in an hour says much about how environmentally creative the institution is. The study environments in ksu lacks beauty,it lacks innovation,lacks creativity. A university where every building is just sitting anywhere without craft, no style,nothing inventive at all. They say the way you think is as a result of your environment,so how do they expect immense imaginative reasoning from students with a study enviroment like that ??
* Learning is 90% theoretical :
In ksu its all about writing and writing and writing,without proper exposure to the outside world,practicals more like. Imagine someone studying physics,who is suppose to deal with real life situations of what they've being thought,is asked to calculate speed of a trailer coming and going from one place to another,from 100 level to 400 level,then what has he or she learnt really ??
* Uneasy living in and around campus :
This is our everyday complain. No light, no water,and when you have ulcer and go to the school clinic they give you drip and drugs for typhoid fever and malaria,no shuttle for students to move around school so we keep trekking everyday under the sun to lectures,inadequate security and so many many other things. Yet they want plenty first class graduates,there is God.
* Unfriendly academic schedule :
* Poor student union government overtime :
Hmmmm. Our SUG,our controversial SUG. The conduct of the student union government has spurned up debate overtime as to where their loyalty lie,are they really the student defendant or the administration's tool ?? That's a topic for anothe time.
The student union government of institutions is a body of student leaders who protect the right and welfare of students in an institution. They are more like the "voice of the voiceless",but what we've learnt overtime about student union government of KSU is that they are the "voiceless voice of the voiceless". They act majorly as if they don't exist,and they are meant to be protecting our rights ?? The kogi state university sug just move along with the administration,what is their usefulness to student,what are they doing to help us,how many press conferences do they conduct to inform students of their new policies to improve the lives of students ?? Are they really carrying us along with the plans of the administration the way they are suppose to ?? Are they informing us of the do's and don'ts in ksu ??? So many questions. Just look at what the UNILAG SUG are doing at moment,its makes you feel secured as a student,not feel scared and vulnerable the way KSU SUG make us feel.
* Technological stalemate over the years .
* Improper motivation :
When a student finally graduates with a first degrees through serious hard work over four years what do they give such student ?? Only a handshake,not even a tuber of yam....that's a proper way to motivate the ones coming up to make a first class.
