In modern society, stress is becoming a part of life for many
of us. Long working hours, commitments to others and
paying the bills are hardly new factors, but in an age of
austerity they are more keenly felt. This means that it is vital
to empower yourself to combat stress and ensure you don’t
become overwhelmed by the daily bump and grind. The
first step is to recognise how to spot if you’re stressed and
the following 6 symptoms of stress will help you do just
that.
1. Skin Problems
Many of us may consider stress a mental issue that we can
hide away from others, but this is just not the case. The
impact that stress has will manifest itself in a very physical
way in terms of your skin. This is because stress will leave
your skin more prone to irritants such as eczema, acne and
psoriasis.
2. Poor Concentration
We focus best in quiet, calm spaces and this goes for our
mind as well as environment. Stress causes your brain to be
filled with worries which will detract from your problem
solving abilities. Studies have shown that students before
an exam are much worse at mental tasks than after it, this
is because the impending stress causing event has passed.
3. Low Libido
So much of our physical and mental health can be
understood through our sex lives, so if you are suffering
from a low libido then perhaps there is an underlying cause.
Stress may well be it as studies have proven it will reduce
desire for sex as well as impact on sexual performance for
both men and women.
4. Illness
The immune system is as important to us staying alive as
water or oxygen; germs and infection are everywhere, so it
is vital our body’s defences are sound. However, stress will
undermine them as the physical impact of responding to
challenging circumstances constantly will pay a heavy toll of
reduced immune response and more illness.
5. Hitting the Bottle
Escapism is a common tactic when faced with stress and
there is nothing more accessible than alcohol to do so. Use
of booze to do this, however, is not a healthy way of tackling
the root causes and changing lifestyle, but rather an
exercise in burying your head in the sand. In the long-term,
drink will only do more harm than good.
6. Hair Loss
We all blame our first grey hair on stress, but really stress
will do much worse to our dos. Hair loss is far more likely as
stress will bring on a condition called Telogen Effluvium.
This condition causes up to ¾ of your hair to be lost after a
stressful event, which will then only grow back gradually as
your stress levels abate.
